Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease: Root Cause resolution and  Natural Remedies

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a general term that includes two main disorders:

Ulcerative colitis
Crohn's disease

These two diseases are related, but they are considered separate disorders with somewhat different treatment options. The basic distinctions are location and severity. As many as 10% of patients with IBD have features and symptoms that match the criteria for both disorders, at least in the early stages. (This is called indeterminate colitis.)

Ulcerative colitis occurs only in the large intestine. Ulcers form in the inner lining, or mucosa , of the colon or rectum, often resulting in diarrhea, blood, and pus. The inflammation is usually most severe in the sigmoid and rectum and usually diminishes higher in the colon. It is divided into divided into different categories depending on the location of the disease. The three main types of ulcerative colitis are:

Proctitis. Disease only in the rectum (the lower part of the colon that connects with the anus). In about a third of patients, ulcerative colitis begins with ulcerative proctitis.
Limited or Distal Colitis. Disease in the left side of the colon.

Pancolitis. Disease in entire colon.

Crohn's Disease. Crohn's disease is an inflammation that extends into the deeper layers of the intestinal wall. It is found most often in the area bridging the small and large intestines, specifically in the ileum and the cecum, which is sometimes referred to as the ileocecal region. Crohn's disease can occur less frequently in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract, including the anus, stomach, esophagus, and even the mouth. It may affect the entire colon, form a string of connected ulcers in one part of the colon, or develop as multiple scattered clusters of ulcers skipping healthy tissue in between.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease of the large intestine, also known as the colon, in which the lining of the colon becomes inflamed and develops tiny open sores, or ulcers, that produce pus and mucous. The combination of inflammation and ulceration can cause abdominal discomfort and frequent emptying of the colon.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease is the result of an abnormal response by your body's immune system. Normally, the cells and proteins that make up the immune system protect you from infection. In people with IBD, however, the immune system mistakes food, bacteria, and other materials in the intestine for foreign or invading substances. When this happens, the body sends white blood cells into the lining of the intestines, where they produce chronic inflammation and ulcerations.

It’s important to understand the difference between ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the Gastrointestinal (GI) Tract, but ulcerative colitis affects only the colon. Additionally, while Crohn’s disease can affect all layers of the bowel wall, ulcerative colitis only affects the lining of the colon.
While both ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are types of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), they should not be confused with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a disorder that affects the muscle contractions of the colon. IBS is not characterized by intestinal inflammation. Watch this webcast to learn more about ulcerative colitis.

Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's symptoms can vary, depending on the severity of inflammation and where it occurs; they typically develop over time. Most people experience mild to moderate symptoms, but the course of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's may vary and some people have long periods of remission. The symptoms depend on the location of the disease-causing inflammation. If you have ulcerative colitis or Crohn's , you may have the following signs and symptoms:

• Diarrhea, often with blood or pus
• Abdominal pain and cramping
• Rectal pain
• Rectal bleeding
• Urgency to discharge stool
• Inability to discharge stool, despite the urgency
• Weight loss
• Fatigue or chronic fatigue syndrome
• Fever
• Failure to grow (in children)

Living with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's Disease can lead to some serious health conditions and complications. These occurrences include:

  • Severe bleeding
  • A hole in the colon
  • Severe dehydration
  • Liver disease
  • Bone loss
  • Inflammation of the skin, joints and eyes
  • Sores in the lining of the mouth
  • An increased risk of colon cancer
  • A rapidly swelling colon
  • An increased risk of blood clots in veins and arteries

Root Causes of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease

Diet and stress were always known to be the root causes of any inflammatory bowel disease, but recently doctors have concluded that these factors may aggravate the inflammatory condition but do not cause it, according to the Mayo Clinic. One possible cause is an immune system malfunction. When the immune system tries to fight off an invading virus or bacterium, an abnormal immune response causes the immune system to attack the cells in the digestive tract.

Ulcerative colitis usually begins before the age of 30, but there are some cases when people did not develop the disease until after age 60. You are at a higher risk of developing ulcerative colitis if you have a close relative with the disease, such as a parent or sibling. Another major risk factor is a certain medication used to treat scarring cystic acne, called isotretinoin. In studies published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, a link between the development of ulcerative colitis and isotretinoin was established.

Stress can also cause a flare-up. It’s important to avoid stress, particularly chronic stress, by exercising, stretching, and practicing relaxation techniques and breathing exercises.

Basically speaking, anything which causes stress to our immune system can lead to chronic inflammation within the colon.   This will vary from person to person.
